  Important Information

This free e-newsletter is borne out of a passion for proper health education to be made freely available to everyone (and don’t worry, your email address will never be given to anyone else – it remains confidential). I am 100% dedicated to finding and reporting the truth on topics that matter and I am also 100% independent, which means I take no money from companies or products I may write about, and I cannot be bought off by suppliers. It is also not my intention to sell you anything in this newsletter and I promote what I believe to be the absolute truth at all times. Sometimes people heavily promote a particular brand of water filter, cleaning agent, health product or equipment for monetary gain, free advertising or some exposure as a result of their “endorsement”. I have never done this, nor will I ever do so. It is my absolute joy and pleasure to provide scientific information in this newsletter – for free! Hope you enjoy it!

Sally-Ann Creed |  MAY 2007 General Health Newsletter
Well, winter seems to have finally arrived in Cape Town.  Take care to get plenty of antioxidants, in particular Vitamin C, this winter, to avoid getting colds and flu.  A flu jab is never necessary in my opinion, but a healthy diet, lifestyle and sensible supplementation goes a long way to keeping you from those dreaded days in bed, and possible antibiotics.
I'm thrilled so many of you popped into my new health store CREEDS this past month - we've loved seeing you!  We're open every day but Sundays and public Holidays 9-5.30 in the Steenberg Village, Tokai.  Organic veg on sale, plus a host of supplements and organic foods of every description.  Our talks start soon too.
See the left sidebar for what's in the Subscriber's E-Magazine this month, and download a form and join if you wish to.  Lots on the way to care for your dogs, new dog food and many articles not mentioned on the Member's Area of the site. The No Sweat e-Nuts and Bolts Course is also available on my website.

Bolster your immune system with Ester-C® - clinically shown to remain active in the white blood cells for up to 24 hours! (Bernal S et al. "Vitamin C uptake in white blood cells." In Vivo. 2006). This highly advanced, patented immune support formula is non-acidic, gentler on the digestive system than ordinary vitamin C, and contains naturally-occurring metabolites for quick absorption. Flaxseed oil and Prostate Cancer

The high ALA in flaxseed oil looks to be well documented now as a huge factor in prostate cancer promotion, whilst fish oils have the opposite effect - click here for the whole story , and... I would suggest switching immediately to fish oil!

Fish versus Flax (direct quote – click here for full article)

Current research is providing evidence that the conversion of ALA, as found in flax seed, has a very low conversion rate to the necessary EPA and DHA metabolites. In a recent study, ALA converted to EPA was only 0.2%, concluding that flax seed oil was not a good source of EPA and DHA.  In another study, the conversion rate of ALA to EPA and DHA was approximately 6% for EPA and 3.8% for DHA.

With a diet rich in omega-6 fatty acids, conversion is further reduced by 40 to 50%. The research on ALA conversion to EPA and DHA has suggested several factors that contribute to this low rate of conversion. For further explanation and to see a full transcript of this article, please click here.

In Conclusion: For anyone looking for an efficient method of specifically increasing their intake of EPA/DHA Omega 3s, flax seed oil (Omega 3 ALA) is not to be recommended! (end of quote)

Dangers in Your Grocery Bag

Do you know which seven dangerous food ingredients to watch out for in your groceries? These are the "deadly seven," and they can directly promote heart disease, migraines, obesity, outrageous food cravings, osteoporosis, diabetes and even birth defects.  The top three most dangerous ingredients according to the Truth Publishing chap are:

1) Sodium nitrite - causes cancer, found in processed meats like hot dogs, bacon, sausage. Used to make meats appear red (a colour fixer chemical).

2) Hydrogenated oils - cause heart disease, nutritional deficiencies, general deterioration of cellular health, and much more. Found in biscuits, crackers, margarine and many "manufactured" foods. Used to make oils stay in the food, extending shelf life. Sometimes also called "plastic fat."

3) Excitotoxins - aspartame, monosodium glutamate and others. These neurotoxic chemical additives directly harm nerve cells, over-exciting them to the point of cell death, according to Dr. Russell Blaylock. They're found in diet sodas, canned soup, salad dressing, breakfast sausage and even many manufactured vegetarian foods. They're used to add flavour to over-processed, boring foods that have had the life cooked out of them.

It's so much better to cook your own food from scratch.  Did you know, for example (according to the book “Grocery Warning”), that:

  • Feeding children hot dogs increases their risk of brain cancer by 300%?
  • Food companies now "hide" MSG in safe-sounding ingredients like yeast extract or torula yeast?
  • Many oranges are actually dipped in an artificial orange dye in order to make them more visually appealing? It's the same dye that's been banned for use in foods because of cancer risk.
  • Eating just one serving of processed meats each day increases your risk of pancreatic cancer by 67%?
   Pet Food Product Recall

On March 16, 2007 a North American pet food recall was issued by Menu Foods for cat and dog food manufactured in the "cuts and gravy" format between December 3, 2006 and March 6, 2007. Quite scary.  We've had several recalls here in South Africa over the past few months, with many different foods being affected.  It's a world-wide problem as most pet foods are made with the same raw ingredients today. Here are sites to check: click here and then there’s Hills recalling their pet food – to see batch numbers click here.

Apparently melamine is the culprit - it contaminated wheat supplied by a Chinese exporter to the US. The resultant wheat gluten was used in wet foods supplied by a multitude of manufacturers. It is now thought to have been used in some dry foods as well. Melamine is apparently used as a fertilizer there. (Is this why processed food can taste like plastic?).

Either way it's of grave concern.  I've addressed this at length in my subscriber letter and on my Member area of the website - at the end of the day, make your own dog food!

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has launched an investigation into whether a chemical thought to be responsible for a number of pet deaths has entered the human food chain. The original scare began when the chemical was found in pet food containing contaminated wheat gluten or rice protein concentrate shipped from China. Pet food manufacturers have voluntarily recalled more than 100 brands of dog and cat food across the country since March 16, prompted by reported cases of cats and dogs that developed kidney failure after eating the affected products.

Safe Dog Food?

Simple - make your own!  For more information see my website for recipes and ideas.  I will also be providing a full recipe from Creeds later this month, and perhaps some talks too - on how best to feed your animals.  If you want to attend a talk - send me an email with "Animal Food Talk".  We'll then let you know when I'll give a talk at Creeds.
