Important Information
This free e-newsletter is borne out of a
passion for proper health education to be made freely available to
everyone (and don’t worry, your email address will never be given to
anyone else – it remains confidential). I am 100% dedicated to finding
and reporting the truth on topics that matter and I am also
100% independent, which means I take no
money from companies or products I may write about, and I cannot be
bought off by suppliers. It is also not my intention to sell you
anything in this newsletter and I promote what I believe to be the
absolute truth at all times. Sometimes people heavily promote a
particular brand of water filter, cleaning agent, health product or
equipment for monetary gain, free advertising or some exposure as a
result of their “endorsement”. I have never done this, nor will I ever
do so. It is my absolute joy and pleasure to provide scientific
information in this newsletter – for free! Hope you enjoy it!

General Health Newsletter – April 2010
A free
monthly newsletter by Sally-Ann Creed,
Clinical Nutritionist
Winner of SA’s Most Influential Women in Business &
Government 2009/2010
We’ve
just returned from a fabulous time in the USA –
what great people we had the pleasure to present
a health conference to. Sadly, the floods came
as we were leaving, and our hearts go out to all
those lovely people who are suffering after
effects of these floods on their homes just 2
weeks after the previous floods. God opened the
way for us to be there at the right time – His
timing is always perfect. I have SO much health
news to share – but this will be in the next
issue – May 2010. This one’s too full already.
My letters will certainly be much shorter in
future – I do apologise for the length this
time.
Thank you to those of you who wrote me such
fantastic letters regarding the outdated China
Study! I obviously hit a nerve when I mentioned
this last month – and those of you who really
want the truth, or who were challenged to look
further ended up writing me such fabulous
letters – I appreciate you all. One line from
one of my readers summed up what so many said,
and for which I was profoundly grateful: “Thanks
for a brilliant newsletter with a Christian
viewpoint and challenge!”
I have covered extensively in my E-Mag this
month the controversy regarding the China Study
flaws -
more information should you wish to
subscribe.

CRN
SAYS THERE ARE
NO
SAFETY ISSUES WITH FISH OIL
A witch hunt ensued last month
under Prop 65 which had many
health professionals falling
about laughing at the outlandish
nature of the article. Even
funnier than the ridiculous
lawsuit, was the hilarious
publication someone sent to me,
where the writer had tried to
‘explain’ why fish oil was not
as good as flaxseed oil by
riding on the back of this
lawsuit. For goodness sake
listen to those with proper
health qualifications and a
scientific background rather
than those who have none (unless
you want a good laugh of
course). While the article I was
sent is funny to those who have
a scientific background, I doubt
it was intended as humour. Don’t
be misled – fish oil is a
seriously healthy product.
Please look back at my
newsletters, my book and look
through the free health articles
on my site for more. Or email me
for relevant sites to put your
mind at rest.
Here’s a quotation from one of
the most respected medical
and nutrition bodies in the
world – the Council for
Responsible Nutrition. At
the end of the day this sounds
to me like a threatened drug
industry and people cashing in
on this poor ‘science’ for their
own selfish motives (mainly
money!) expose themselves in the
worst possible way. Science has
proved for decades (with nearly
4000 peer-researched studies and
medical trials) that there is
nothing in the natural world to
touch fish oil. So I quote 2
good articles below (there are
dozens of other rebuttals to
this nonsense if you care to
find them). |

“WASHINGTON, D.C., March 2,
2010 — In response to a
press conference today held to
announce a lawsuit against fish
oil dietary supplement
manufacturers and retailers,
the Council for Responsible
Nutrition (CRN), the leading
trade association representing
the dietary supplement industry,
issued the following statement: |
|
|
|
Statement by Andrew Shao, Ph.D.,
senior vice president,
scientific and regulatory
affairs, CRN: |
|
|
|
“Fish oil supplements are among
the safest, most beneficial
health products on the market.
Today’s announcement of a
lawsuit against companies
manufacturing or selling popular
products is just that -
a lawsuit looking for media
attention, not a public safety
concern for consumers. |
|
|
|
|
CRN believes the suit was filed
in California in order to take
advantage of a state law, Prop
65, which has conservative
standards that are not law
in the rest of the nation.
Further, the information
disclosed during the press
conference danced around the
details, offering a lack of
specificity to the general
public about the levels of
polychlorinated biphenyl (PCB)
compounds found in the fish oil
products that were tested.
Though the lawyers suggest that
the levels of PCBs found in
these products far exceed what
is acceptable by Prop 65
standards, the actual levels of
PCBs found in the majority of
these products do not appear to
exceed the Prop 65 limit (90 ng/day).
Furthermore, they fail to
mention that the Food and Drug
Administration’s (FDA) tolerance
level for PCBs in fish (2,000
parts per billion) far exceeds
the levels of PCBs found in fish
oil.
It is important to put this into
context.
PCBs are ubiquitous within the
environment, which means that
all fish - whether fish found in
oceans and rivers or fish oil
supplements - contain at least
trace amounts of PCBs. In fact,
conventional food forms of fish
contain higher levels of PCBs
than fish oil supplements in
part because supplement fish oil
products go through a refining
process which reduces PCBs and
other contaminants. The FDA has
established a tolerance level
for PCBs in fish, which is 2.0
parts per million (ppm, also
expressed as mg/kg) or 2,000
parts per billion; in
comparison, the Prop 65 daily
limit for PCBs for a cancer
warning is 90 ng/day, which is
significantly lower than what
FDA deems safe. The lawyers are
using California’s Prop 65
statute to bring attention to
their case by attempting to
frame this as a public health
concern, when in reality, fish
oil has enjoyed decades of safe
use.
The bottom line is that
consumers, whether they live in
California or elsewhere, should
continue to feel confident in
the safety and efficacy of their
fish oil supplements. This
lawsuit does nothing to change
the strong science supporting
the many health benefits of fish
oil, which range from
cardiovascular health to
cognitive development of infants
and young children, and the very
low thresholds of PCBs which
apparently trigger a labeling
requirement in California cannot
be extrapolated to demonstrate
any actual risks at those
levels. The health benefits for
fish oil far outweigh any
suggested, and unsupported,
risks.”
*According to Nutrition
Business Journal, U.S.
consumer sales of fish and
animal oil dietary supplements
totaled $739 million,
a growth of 18% in 2008.
(Ref).
Globally fish oil has taken the
world by storm – there’s nothing
to touch it. Not drugs and not
flaxseed oil. Only threatened
‘business’ lashes out this way. |

Dr Joel Fuhrman says
NO
to Flaxseed Oil
Dr Joel Fuhrman,
well-known speaker at
health events in USA,
says this (and I quote)
“There is no need for
flaxseed oil when whole
ground flaxseed provides
more benefits and no
risk. It seems that
everyone you ask about
flaxseed oil and
prostate cancer gives a
different answer. And to
be fair, this is a
complex subject that I
will just briefly
address here.
Recent studies have
suggested that flaxseed
oil may contribute to
increased prostate
cancer risk.
Fortunately, there is
no need to consume
flaxseed oil. The
best way to get omega-3
fatty acids is to
consume whole flaxseed.
Plus, when you consume
whole flaxseed, not only
do you get the best
plant source of omega-3
fatty acids, you also
get the richest source
of dietary lignans.
Lignans are converted by
bacteria in the
intestinal tract to
horomone-like compounds
called phytoestrogens
that have protective
effects against
hormone-related cancers
such as breast and
prostate cancer. In
fact, consuming
ground flaxseed has
been shown to have
beneficial properties
for prevention and
treatment of both breast
and prostate cancer.
When you consume the
whole seeds, not
the oil, the
results show
significantly reduced
growth rate of cancer
cells, and increased
death rate of cancer
cells. Another way to
safely and effectively
contribute to your
omega-3 intake is to eat
a few walnuts and lots
of leafy green
vegetables. When you get
your essential fats from
whole natural foods, you
get powerful
disease-fighting
nutrients in the process
that are not found
in oils.”
When it comes to omega-3
fatty acids, my
recommendation is to
consume about one
tablespoon of ground
flaxseed per day, and
forgo the oil. |

Q
&
A:
Saturated Fats No Longer the
Enemy! |
|
|
Q
I’m confused. Is saturated fat good or
bad? |
|
A:
Studies continue to flow in to confirm
what I’ve always said – saturated fat is
not the enemy. A recent review of 21
studies covering 348,000 adults showed
that eating large amounts of saturated
fats did not increase risk for heart
disease or strokes (American Journal
of Clinical Nutrition, March 1, 2010).
The “thinking” has always been one
of close association of heart attacks
and strokes with eating meat or whole
milk dairy products is explained by
their high saturated fat content, but
consider this: |
|
·
Societies that eat lots of saturated
fats in coconut, palm and palm kernel
oils are not at increased risk for heart
attacks, strokes and premature death
· Poultry
is a rich source of saturated fats but
has not been shown to increase risk for
premature death, cancer or heart attacks
– and this includes eating around 1-2
eggs daily (that’s right, daily)
· Replacing
saturated fats with refined
carbohydrates actually increases
heart attack risk by increasing obesity,
insulin resistance, triglycerides, and
small LDL particles that cause heart
attacks; and by lowering the good HDL
cholesterol that helps to prevent heart
attacks
|
|
|
|
Of course this then begs the question –
is the American Heart Association's
recommendation that adults get no more
than 7% of their daily calories from
saturated fat correct? Obviously not!
It’s interesting to note that in some
studies conducted, women who ate
more saturated animal fats had lower
levels of heart disease. Keep
looking – you’ll be excited by the new
studies – outdated studies are just that
– outdated! They looked at the wrong
thing. Ever seen the “Moonwalking
Bear” in the awareness test? Well, this
illustrates my point – in looking at
animal fat, the ‘researchers’
conveniently forgot to look at the other
variables and missed them entirely.
Unbiased studies show a very different
picture, including the fantastic new
studies on eggs and their value in
preventing heart disease, no link with
saturated fat and heart disease etc –
all very interesting and greatly
encouraging. So don’t give up your eggs
and meat just yet! |

Alarming Decline in Cape
Water Quality
(Simply Green,
14/3/2010)
The overall quality of
the city's inland and
coastal water has
reached a 10-year low,
and despite the
associated health
threats, budget and
resource constraints
mean the situation is
unlikely to be reversed
soon, says a City of
Cape Town report. The
report on the overall
water quality in 2009,
showed that |
|
|
|
despite slight improvements in certain
areas, the overall compliance with water
quality guidelines for inland water
systems had dropped to 43% from 80.5% in
2000.
If EVER there was a time to invest in a
water distiller it’s now. We still have
FOUR left at the old price – ring us on
(021) 794-3052 to secure one, or pop
into Creed Nutrition and pick one up (We
courier all over the country). I’ve
had mine for 16 years, and it’s all we
drink – it’s fantastic, and I wouldn’t
be without it. |

Spiritual Health:
With Autumn upon us we are heading for
darker, cooler days, leaves falling and
for some – a sense of depression. God’s
word says “A cheerful heart is like
medicine” – perhaps like
antidepressants? The Person who will
give you that cheerful heart though is
the Lord Jesus Christ – once He’s washed
your sin away, you cannot help but be
cheerful! A good way to get to know Him
is to join a lively church – if you need
help finding one, ask us! Consider the
meaning of Easter – that Jesus died, and
rose from the dead to give you eternal
life. He loves you enough to have done
that – I pray you’d know His closeness
and the salvation He came to bring you. |
BYE
May this Autumn be filled with cheer and with
excitement for NEW things in your life. As we
celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus –
that you’d know His peace. Lots of love & God
bless,
