I
mportant Information
This free e-newsletter is borne out of a passion for proper health education to be made freely available to everyone (and don’t worry, your email address will never be given to anyone else – it remains confidential). I am 100% dedicated to finding and reporting the truth on topics that matter and I am also 100% independent, which means I take no money from companies or products I may write about, and I cannot be bought off by suppliers. It is also not my intention to sell you anything in this newsletter and I promote what I believe to be the absolute truth at all times. Sometimes people heavily promote a particular brand of water filter, cleaning agent, health product or equipment for monetary gain, free advertising or some exposure as a result of their “endorsement”. I have never done this, nor will I ever do so. It is my absolute joy and pleasure to provide scientific information in this newsletter – for free! Hope you enjoy it!

General Health Newsletter – June 2010
A free monthly newsletter by Sally-Ann Creed, Clinical Nutritionist

We’re into a very chilly winter here in Cape Town and I’ve never seen so many poor souls with colds, ‘flu and bronchitis in a single winter – viruses are getting so vicious, and opportunistic bacterial infections are becoming more antibiotic resistant, requiring several courses to knock them out.  Diet and lifestyle modification can make all the difference. Now’s the time for mega-doses of Vitamin C and as many antioxidant foods as you can eat!  I have covered many interesting topical subjects this month in my Subscriber E-Mag [more information should you wish to subscribe.] I’m also excited to give you a preview of the cover of a new book I have completed – called Raising Happy Healthy Children – due for launch on 10 August.

RAISING HAPPY HEALTHY CHILDREN – OUR NEW BOOK!

A book I co-authored with my husband’s cousin, Andalane, is a labour of love. Andalene has done the discipline and I have done the nutrition required from 0 (pregnancy) to 6 years old. We hope it will be a valuable companion for all new mums out there!

This book has already attracted an enormous amount of attention so far.  We believe this will be a definitive guide for new parents on things not previously seen in any child-rearing book.  It has grown out of our own experience, and

has now been put together in a simple, easy to understand format which will be easy to apply as well. No fads, no sweat – just helpful information which we pray will be life-changing. Contact us on pa@sallyanncreed.co.za to pre-order your copies. (Retail R149.95)

The Truth about Flaxseed Oil and Fat Loss

Read a great article by Christian Finn – so many people are now coming out with the truth about flaxseed oil it’s a blessing to know that people want truth over clever marketing. So here’s a little of what’s in the article with quotations marks: “…many don't realize that the omega-3 fatty acids found in plant-derived products are not the same as those in fish. Nor have they been proven to deliver the same kind of benefits.”  And again – he says “Although similar in structure, the benefits of ALA, EPA, and DHA are not the same.”

He ends with this: “In fact, despite the hype, I haven't been able to find a single human study to show that alpha-linolenic acid, the omega-3 fatty acid found in foods like chia seeds or flaxseed oil, has any impact on body composition whatsoever. Read more here if you wish to. My experience with so many people is that they have reported excessive weight gain on flaxseed oil, and no benefit whatsoever.  When they changed to fish oil, however, there was a huge improvement in their symptoms, with weight loss in those who needed it (as fish oil mobilizes body fat), and weight stabilization in already slim people.  I’ve also quoted a really good article in the June E Mag on this subject by another USA health professional.

Q & A: Plant & Animal Omega-3’s

Q: What is the difference between plant and fish omega-3 oils?

A: It just so happens that Dr Mercola has an article this month I’ll quote from in answer to this below:

The Significant Difference Between Plant- Versus Animal-Based Omega-3 Fats

Unfortunately there is still plenty of confusion about omega-3 fats as many “experts” fail to appreciate the importance of animal based omega-3 fats [fatty fish and grass-fed beef], as opposed to just eating plant based omega-3 fats that contain ALA. It’s important to realize that while plant-based omega-3 fats are necessary, highly beneficial, and should be consumed as well, the evidence is very clear that they are not an acceptable substitute for animal based omega-3 fats.

This is primarily related to the fact that your body does not easily convert the ALA in plant based fats to the longer fats of EPA and DHA. And if you have diabetes, are overweight, have high blood pressure or high cholesterol, your body has even more difficulty converting these fats.  Animal-based omega-3 fats contain two fatty acids crucial to your health, DHA and EPA. These two fatty acids, not ALA, are the ones that are pivotal in preventing heart disease, cancer, and many other diseases. Over 50% of your brain is also made up of DHA, which explains why it’s so essential for proper brain function and development.” Read the full article.  [DHA and EPA supplements come from fish oil by the way – and have outstanding results!]

Vegetables Devoid of Vitamins

You may have heard there is not much cancer in China – not true at all!  A report states: “The area of China with the lowest micronutrient intake has the highest rate of cancer. Supplementation with vitamin E, selenium and beta-carotene lowers the rate.” Vitamin/mineral supplementation and cancer risk: international chemoprevention trials. Blot WJ.
