mportant Information
This free e-newsletter is borne out of a passion for proper health education to be made freely available to everyone (and don’t worry, your email address will never be given to anyone else – it remains confidential). I am 100% dedicated to finding and reporting the truth on topics that matter and I am also 100% independent, which means I take no money from companies or products I may write about, and I cannot be bought off by suppliers. It is also not my intention to sell you anything in this newsletter and I promote what I believe to be the absolute truth at all times. Sometimes people heavily promote a particular brand of water filter, cleaning agent, health product or equipment for monetary gain, free advertising or some exposure as a result of their “endorsement”. I have never done this, nor will I ever do so. It is my absolute joy and pleasure to provide scientific information in this newsletter – for free! Hope you enjoy it!

General Health Newsletter – March 2010
A free monthly newsletter by Sally-Ann Creed, Clinical Nutritionist
Winner of SA’s Most Influential Women in Business & Government 2009/2010

We will be off to USA this month to do a health conference, so please be patient if your newsletter is a few days late next month (though I’ll try not to do that).  This month we look at a few interesting topics – such as a new study showing saturated fat does not cause heart disease and strokes which is making news around the world – and naturally causing ‘waves’ in certain camps. [Lots more information in our Subscriber E-Mag too - should you wish to subscribe.] .

Because March is a month of new beginnings for us in so many ways – I have used a few quotations around this theme this month. (One new beginning for Bill and I is a new addition to our family – little Boaz – a 3,5 month Dobermann who is slowly stealing our hearts).  I’m also always reminded that all great achievements begin with small beginnings – I do hope that any small beginnings and changes you make in your life in the realm of health will lead to great results for you later on, and exceed all your expectations.

Saturated Fat Not Linked to Heart Disease and Strokes
Despite the general belief, there is no link between the intake of saturated fat and the development of heart disease, a new study finds. Previous studies reported that the Western diet, rich in saturated fat, increases the blood levels of "bad LDL cholesterol", the main risk factor for heart disease and stroke. The American Heart Association (AHA), therefore, recommended adults not to get more than 7 percent of their daily calories from the fat.

But interestingly, according to the study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition last month, the saturated fat mainly found in meat and dairy products does not increase the risk of cardiovascular disease or stroke at all!  The studies included almost 350,000 adults who were healthy at the start of the study. In the ensuing 23 years, 11,000 people had a stroke or were diagnosed with heart disease. But there was no difference in risk between those eating the least saturated fat and those eating the most.

Mmm, I wonder what this will do to the already clearly flawed and debunked theory of Colin T Campbell’s The China Study?!!  I don’t believe God made a mistake in His recommendations on what we should be eating, and I believe He knows more than Colin Campbell (who is not a medical doctor incidentally, but a PhD).  Now we are seeing studies which are proving that eggs are extremely good for us, meat and fish are exemplary forms of protein to keep us healthy and strong, and hopefully thinking people will abandon the flakey fads which have sought to masquerade as healthy living and start to look at scientific health differently.  Too much of anything is not good, so I’m not advocating a brick of butter a day, but as part of a normal, healthy diet – saturated fat is in fact required by the body for certain functions.  What the ‘researchers’ of the flakey fads often forget to mention is that those eating a lot of saturated fat also ate a lot of white bread, soft drinks, sugar and fructose – and generally had poor diets.

Why People Turn to Healthy Alternatives

I’m no doctor-basher – in fact, I have enormous respect for the medical community, for their knowledge, dedication and commitment to helping sick people.  I think many would agree though, that their curriculum simply doesn’t offer them enough opportunity to learn about the alternatives to drugs, equipping them with the powerful knowledge of what food can accomplish in the whole healing process.  It would seem it’s an industry tailored to cure disease rather than to promote health.  Happily, many medics are taking it upon themselves to do extra-curricular studies to equip themselves in this area – please support these doctors!

Some years ago on July 26, 2000, one of medicine’s most respected and honoured public-health experts, Dr. Barbara Starfield, revealed her findings on healthcare in America which she published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. Terrifyingly, these were her conclusions:

Every year in the US there are:

·   12,000 deaths from unnecessary surgeries;

·        7,000 deaths from medication errors in hospitals;

·        20,000 deaths from other errors in hospitals;

·        80,000 deaths from infections acquired in hospitals;

·        106,000 deaths from FDA-approved correctly prescribed medicines

The tally of medically-caused deaths in the US every year is 225,000. This makes the medical system the third leading cause of death in the US, behind heart disease and cancer. Ulp… It sounds like the casualty count in a major war or a natural disaster, doesn’t it?  It’s no wonder people are looking for alternatives. Because there has never been a recorded death from vitamins, common sense tells me that this is the way to go first if you have chronic illness of any kind – and if you really don’t have any success after you have given it your best shot, that might be the time to resort to drug therapy.  Get your diet right and meet your nutrient deficiencies – it’s a great place to begin.  Make sure you give any new programme 3-6 month.

Q & A: Help for Rheumatoid Arthritis

Q Is there any truth in fish oils being a pivotal factor in the successful treatment of RA?

A: Absolutely! New research from Queen Mary, University of London and Harvard Medical School has revealed precisely why taking fish oils can help with conditions like rheumatoid arthritis. In a paper published in Nature in Oct 2009, researchers describe how the body converts an ingredient found in fish oils into another chemical called Resolvin D2 which reduces the inflammation that leads to a variety of diseases. The research also suggests that Resolvin D2 could be the basis for a new treatment for diseases including sepsis, stroke and arthritis. Unlike anti-inflammatory drugs, this naturally-formed chemical does not seem to suppress the immune system.

The researchers looked at a particular ingredient of fish oils called DHA. They were able to show how the body converts DHA into Resolvin D2 and discover its exact chemical structure. Mauro Perretti, Professor of Immunopharmacology at Queen Mary, University of London, led the UK team. He said: “We have known for some time that fish oils can help with conditions like arthritis which are linked to inflammation. What we’ve shown here is how the body processes a particular ingredient of fish oils into Resolvin D2. We’ve also looked in detail at this chemical, determining at least some of the ways it relieves inflammation. It seems to be a very powerful chemical and a small amount can have a large effect.”  Please note: only DHA from fish oils will have this effect – flaxseed oil is not able to be converted in the human body into DHA, and it will not have the same effect at all.

Make it Yourself: Healthy, Safe, Edible Play Dough

There are times you want to put your child or grandchild down to play with a safe toy of sorts, and with all the pthalates and other chemicals in toys today, perhaps making a healthy play dough (which they can even eat if they want to without harm) would be a great idea.  It smells nice, and won’t cause any harm!

What you’ll need:
½ cup peanut butter
½ cup honey
1 cup powdered milk like rice or oat milk

What you do next:
Mix this all together and mush it up with your hands until it’s fairly smooth. The oils from the peanut butter will keep it from sticking to the table and the kids' hands, but it will be great dough to manipulate and make things out of without fear of dangerous chemicals or gender-altering substances found in other toys.

Spiritual Health: God’s great works often have humble beginnings. He picked Abraham, an old relic and Sarah his barren wife, to birth His chosen people. He began Israel’s deliverance from Egyptian slavery with a baby in a basket caught in some backwater reeds of the Nile. The Saviour of the world was born in the smelly stable of a tiny town in a downtrodden nation. Hardly auspicious beginnings.  You can begin your new life by simply inviting Jesus into your heart right here, right now, and see what great and wonderful things He can do in your life from such a humble beginning.

Every end is a new beginning! ~ M. Robinson
