Important Information
This free e-newsletter is borne out of a
passion for proper health education to be made freely available to
everyone (and don’t worry, your email address will never be given to
anyone else – it remains confidential). I am 100% dedicated to finding
and reporting the truth on topics that matter and I am also
100% independent, which means I take no
money from companies or products I may write about, and I cannot be
bought off by suppliers. It is also not my intention to sell you
anything in this newsletter and I promote what I believe to be the
absolute truth at all times. Sometimes people heavily promote a
particular brand of water filter, cleaning agent, health product or
equipment for monetary gain, free advertising or some exposure as a
result of their “endorsement”. I have never done this, nor will I ever
do so. It is my absolute joy and pleasure to provide scientific
information in this newsletter – for free! Hope you enjoy it!

General Health Newsletter – December 2009
A free
monthly newsletter by Sally-Ann Creed,
Clinical Nutritionist
Winner of SA’s Most Influential Women in Business &
Government 2009/2010
With the festive season here and 2009 drawing to
a close, I want to wish you a very restful
holiday season, a happy Christmas and most of
all, a healthy time of relaxation, fun and
(hopefully) healthy eating in between the
not-so-healthy food. My humble advice to you
this festive season regarding food is to enjoy a
little of what you like, just don’t overdo it.
If you can choose a healthy alternative – do so.
It’s not that difficult to avoid
over-indulgence, unhealthy food and junk – it
just takes a teensy bit of will-power…. You
might even end up enjoying the day a lot more
and you’ll definitely feel more comfortable.

Awaken to the Walnut
The
healthy walnut now has even more to
boast about. Along with being high in
protein, minerals and omega-3 fatty
acids, walnuts contain melatonin, a
hormone that regulates sleep cycles and
the immune system. According to a recent
study, each gram of walnuts has 2½ to 4½
nanograms of the hormone.
While that doesn’t sound like a lot, in
the study, rats that dined on walnuts
had blood melatonin concentrations three
times higher than rats that ate the
standard diet. Important in treating
insomnia, jet lag and seasonally-induced
depression, melatonin acts as an
antioxidant and may combat the ageing
process. However, it’s unclear how many
walnuts you’d have to eat to get any
therapeutic benefit, but what a yummy
experiment! |

Garlic may Prevent
Cancer
Garlic reduces the risk
of several cancers
according to studies. In
the long-term Iowa
Women's Health Study
researchers followed
41,837 middle-aged
women. Subjects who ate
the most garlic had the
lowest risk of colon
cancer. A few cloves a
week cut risk by 32% and
greater intake decreased
risk even more. While
fruit and vegetable
consumption in general
helped prevent cancer in
this study, garlic
yielded the greatest
preventive benefit of
all the plant foods
analyzed. Other studies
also show that garlic
reduces the risk for
prostate and bladder
cancers. |

Tomatoes and oregano make it
Italian; wine and tarragon make
it French. Sour cream makes it
Russian; lemon and cinnamon make
it Greek. Soy sauce makes it
Chinese; garlic makes it good

Q & A:
What
causes cancer, and how can I prevent it?
There is no quick, simple answer to this
one, but here are some tips:
|
|
|
Some Causes of Cancer:
·
Most people know smoking is a huge
factor, with 4,000 harmful chemicals
present
in each cigarette, it’s said a single puff is 600 times
worst than inhaling exhaust
fumes.
·
Some carcinogenic foods include burned
braai foods, deep fried foods and
artificially preserved foods (with nitrites such as
‘fake’ meats).
·
Fats which cause cancer include canola
oil, margarines, palm oil (check
labels!),
sunflower oil and flaxseed oil. |
|
|
Foods which Prevent Cancer:
Cruciferous veg (cabbage, broccoli,
cauliflower), in fact all brightly
coloured vegetables ‘advertise’ their
anticarcinogenic properties, and should
be eaten cooked and raw. Tea is great
as it contains 30 antioxidants! So
enjoy your cuppa without guilt, knowing
you’re doing yourself good. Healthy
fats are olive oil, macadamia oil, real
butter, fatty fish and fish oil
supplements. |
| |
 |
Make Your Own:
Cucumber & Parsley ‘Spa Mask’
Here’s all you’ll need:
1
tablespoon plain yogurt (no chemicals)
1 tablespoon fresh cucumber (peeled)
1 tablespoon fresh parsley leaves
What you
do next:
Puree the cucumber and parsley finely
and mix with the yogurt until smooth.
Cover your face with this creamy mask –
rejuvenates as it moistens. Leave the
mask on for approximately 15-20 minutes
for best results. Rinse with water. Do
not store this mixture – use the same
day. |
THE HEALTH CAFÉ
 |
Recipe:
Lemon Preserve
This is a great gift to make for Christmas, and
wonderful to add into a dish like Moroccan
Chicken for example.
What you’ll
need:
2
wide-mouth 500ml jars 10 lemons
Coarse sea salt or Himalayan salt |
|
|
Here’s what to do next:
-
Wash and dry the two
jam jars and the 10 lemons.
-
Hold each lemon on
its end and cut it, lengthwise, into quarters, but
don’t cut through the bottoms. Pour coarse sea salt
into the cut lemons, making sure all the
sides/quarters are coated with salt. Place 1-2
lemons in each jar, adding a third lemon if there’s
room (you might need more lemons).
-
Once the two jars
are stuffed with lemons, juice the remaining lemons.
Pour enough lemon juice into each jar to cover the
fruit.
-
Set aside in the fridge for at least three weeks
before using. Do it quickly now in time for
Christmas. For a prettier effect in the glass, you
can discard the seeds before salting.
|
| |
|
Make Your Own:
Christmas Glühwein
You’ll
need:
2
bottles (750ml) berry
juice or apple juice
1 cup sugar (or xylitol)
3 cups water
1 lemon, cut in half and studded with 20
cloves
8 cinnamon sticks, broken up |
 |
|
Now do this:
-
Mix
the water, clove-studded lemon and
cinnamon sticks together in a large
pan.
-
Simmer gently for an hour.
-
Strain into a jug and use the pan to
heat the juice.
-
Return the water mixture to the pan
and stir.
-
Serve in mugs or heatproof glasses.
Garnish with orange slices.

Spiritual Health:
Because we know that this time of year
is all about God’s Son, Jesus – perhaps
a well-known Scripture is appropriate
here from John 3:16 “For God SO
loved the world that He sent His only
Son – that whosoever believes on Him may
have eternal life”. Whosoever –
that includes you if you want it! |
BYE
Have a fabulous Christmas and a happy New Year.
So, till next year, love & God bless from
