  Important Information

This free e-newsletter is borne out of a passion for proper health education to be made freely available to everyone (and don’t worry, your email address will never be given to anyone else – it remains confidential). I am 100% dedicated to finding and reporting the truth on topics that matter and I am also 100% independent, which means I take no money from companies or products I may write about, and I cannot be bought off by suppliers. It is also not my intention to sell you anything in this newsletter and I promote what I believe to be the absolute truth at all times. Sometimes people heavily promote a particular brand of water filter, cleaning agent, health product or equipment for monetary gain, free advertising or some exposure as a result of their “endorsement”. I have never done this, nor will I ever do so. It is my absolute joy and pleasure to provide scientific information in this newsletter – for free! Hope you enjoy it!

Sally Ann Creed |  June 2007 General Health Newsletter
Congratulations to Shaun Chater of Rosebank who won our Distiller competition - Shaun we hope you have many happy years of healthy distilled water!  Watch out for our next competition.
Creeds continues to do well after our official launch - we've loved getting to know so many of you.  Our range grows daily, and our talks have begun.  Get to www.creeds.co.za for what's on at Creeds each month.
In this short newsletter this month I want to address a rather important subject - many times we are told things are "natural" or "safe" when it couldn't be further from the truth!  In examining a few of the latest 'natural" laundry agents on the shelves, I've been appalled at how we are being misled into believing that some things are safe, natural and healthy!  It's simply not true - so let's look at a few of the chemicals to avoid in "Pulling the Wool over Our Eyes?"  (This is the short version below)

IN THE NEWS

Pulling the Wool over Our Eyes…!?

Are you using “natural” Laundry Detergents?  Are you quite sure? Read Your Labels and avoid products with these poisonous ingredients:

Sodium Laureth Sulphate

This cheap detergent ingredient is probably the most dangerous of all.  In the cleaning industry it's used in garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers etc, as it's very corrosive and readily attacks greasy surfaces.

Sodium laureth sulfate is used globally for clinical testing as a primary skin irritant - laboratories use it to irritate skin on test animals and humans so that they may then test healing agents to see how effective they are on the irritated skin. A study at the University of Georgia Medical College, indicated that SLS penetrated into the eyes as well as brain, heart, liver, etc, and showed long-term retention in the tissues. The study also indicated that SLS penetrated young children's eyes and prevented them from developing properly and caused cataracts to develop in adults. It cleans by corrosion. Do we ever NOT want this in our cleaning products!

NB: Sodium Laureth Sulphate and the other sulphated surfactants have been banned by all the major organic certifiers in the world.

Nonyl phenyl ethoxylate - These are the published warnings:

  • Hazardous in case of skin contact
  • Inhalation - get medical attention!
  • Flammability - may be combustible at high temperature
  • Absorbed through skin!
  • Special Remarks on Chronic Effects on Humans: May affect genetic material and cause adverse reproductive effects and birth defects based on animal studies.
  • Eyes: Causes severe eye irritation and conjunctivitis with possible chemical burns of the eye.
  • Studies indicate that continuous exposure to high concentrations may be toxic to the kidneys

Phosphates

Phosphates are natural minerals that are important to a variety of biological processes. While these may be a perfect ingredient for laundry and other detergents, once they’re released into the environment via household wastewater, they destroy the environment in a number of ways. Responsible manufacturers now create household cleaners without using phosphates in their formulas.  Click here to read the full article on the cabbages and cream website.

HRT the latest….

In a What Doctors Don’t Tell You release earlier this month, they report how researchers in 2002 found that HRT was dangerous, with risks outweighing ‘benefits’ (if you can call them that). This was all published in the Women’s Health Initiative Study which discovered that HRT increased the likelihood of heart problems by 29%, stroke by 41% and breast cancer by 26%.  The researchers were so alarmed by their findings that they stopped the study early.  As a result, HRT drug sales dropped and the manufacturers suffered.

Then suddenly, the same research team recently decided that in fact HRT is good for you after all So while drug companies celebrated, a new study released by The Lancet still found that HRT is bad for you as the original Women’s Health Study had found.  The Million Women Study showed that the drug causes ovarian cancer, and that at least 1000 UK women died from the disease as a direct result of using it. "This fits in with the earlier finding that HRT has been directly responsible for the deaths of 30,000 women in the UK, and around 200,000 in the USA, since the early 1990s". (Journal of the American Medical Association, 2007; 297: 1465-77 (revised Women’s Health study); The Lancet, 19 April 2007, published online (Million Women study)).  There are many natural remedies for hormonal problems - don't risk your life with HRT.

Safety Alert: Avandia

A safety alert has come from the USA’s FDA regarding the diabetes drug, Avandia, after studies showed it increases the risk of heart attack by a whopping 45% - in a people-group who are already more prone to heart disease.  The scary part is that it was approved 8 years ago and fairly heavily prescribed.  The question is: has anyone died of heart disease from this drug whilst diabetes was presumed to be the cause? (New England Journal of Medicine, May 21, 2007, published online as: 10.1056/NEJMoa072761).

Q & A (this Q & A repeated after several requests were sent to me)

Q:  What do you think of food combining? For example, the idea that one should wait an hour after eating fruit before consuming any other food?

A: There is no good research evidence at all to support the practice of food combining. Some food combining advocates recommend eating protein alone or carbohydrates alone rather than protein and carbohydrate together. However, this goal is essentially impossible, since vegetables, grains, nuts, seeds, and legumes contain both proteins and carbohydrates. You would have to eliminate all of the above foods from your diet in order to avoid eating protein and carbohydrates together.  Eat food the way God intended – carbs and protein together – and balance your blood sugar naturally. Read more on my website.

Healthy Mind Links

Health extends to our minds as well as our bodies.  Try this amazing puzzle by following the instructions.  After reading each window, click on the boy in the lower right corner. In the last window, type in your numbers in the white box using the keyboard (there is NO cursor). You will be amazed - I don't know how it's done, but the answer appears on the boy's t-shirt. http://digicc.com/fido/

Recipe: Sunflower Treats

This is a very sweet treat, but now and again is a wonderful way to eat something more healthy than a commercial chocolate bar!

What you need:

1 cup organic sunflower seeds, ground
1/4 cup pine nuts, ground (or even almonds might be nice to try)
1 pinch sea salt
6 organic dates, pitted and chopped
1-2 tablespoons orange or apple juice

What you do with this:

·         Use a clean electric coffee grinder to grind up the sunflower seeds and pine nuts.

·         In a food processor, process the sunflower meal, pine nut meal, and salt; add dates, one at a time.

·         When the mixture forms a ball, taste it for sweetness, maybe add another date.

·         When the dough is sweet enough, add the juice gradually until the mixture forms a thick dough.

·         Roll the dough out thinly between two pieces of grease-proof paper. Cut into desired shapes.

·         You can freeze these or just eat them as they are!
