DECEMBER 2008 GENERAL HEALTH
NEWSLETTER
by Sally-Ann Creed, Clinical
Nutritionist (Appl Dip
Clin Nutr,
Australia)
I would like to take this opportunity to wish
you all a very happy Christmas, holidays and
precious memory-making times with your loved
ones this festive season.
Let’s try to make someone else happy in the
process this year, instead of thinking only of
ourselves! See what
you can do! Try to make
it a healthy gesture too!
Let’s consider our planet and not fill it with
more plastic and junk food – but concentrate on
the simpler pleasures which cost so little, and
mean so much.
In the News
The following rather interesting snippet is
quoted in full for you!
“Fosomax –
not all it’s ‘cracked’ up to be?
(no pun intended!)
Fosamax & Femur Fractures.
According to a newly published study, Fosamax –
the drug millions of women take to strengthen
their bones – may cause "unusual
femur fractures." What's so unusual
about these femur (aka thigh bone) fractures,
you ask? Well, they were all caused by falls of
standing height or less – meaning these people
didn't fall off ladders or down a flight of
stairs. In fact, according to the senior study
author, the women were "basically doing nothing"
when their legs broke. And it turns out that
37% of the women who experienced these
fractures had been taking Fosamax for years,
most for at least seven years. Talk about a
product not working as expected! (March
24, 2008).

this topic on her "HSI
On the Spot" daily blog.

Talks
Many people ask me where and when my talks are.
I am actually quite shy, believe it or
not, so I never advertise nor
broadcast my talks to anyone.
However, because I’ve had so many
requests, I am telling you of just one I’m doing
– many are closed for institutions and bodies
where there are special invited guests, so I’m
sorry I can’t tell you about those.
There are some open ones this coming year
– particularly a day-long set of workshops on
Cholesterol. If you would
like to know more about it, please contact Gaye
at
dadams@netactive.co.za
– she will give you details of the one being
held on 31 January in
Port Elizabeth.
For others, perhaps contact us so we can
tell you more.
